Oxfordshire County Council approves £245.5m transport plan for 2026-30

Oxfordshire County Council is set to channel substantial funding into transport infrastructure over the coming years.

The authority has formally submitted its local transport delivery plan to the Department for Transport, outlining how £245.5 million in central government money will be deployed between 2026-27 and 2029-30.

The programme will address road maintenance, enhancements to bus services, schemes promoting walking and cycling, and the development of electric vehicle charging facilities.

Transport cabinet member Gareth Epps described the strategy as the next phase in Oxfordshire’s transport investment.

He explained that the authority is maintaining and upgrading networks across all travel modes throughout the county.

Epps acknowledged that while active travel funding has risen, it falls short of expectations, as Whitehall acknowledges Oxfordshire’s growing ability to implement such projects.

He added that despite cuts to certain government grants, the council remains resolved to improve transport provision.

Epps stated that the administration is striving to deliver superior facilities for bus and rail passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, with further investment details expected to follow.

The strategy incorporates backing for Oxfordshire’s electric vehicle infrastructure approach alongside initiatives under the Vision Zero framework, which seeks to eradicate road fatalities and serious injuries by 2050.

Resources will also fund a heavy goods vehicles pilot scheme aimed at facilitating sustainable freight operations across the county and establishing a transport hub in Benson.

Highways construction and repairs cabinet member Liz Leffman noted that while the anticipated government allocation for highway maintenance has been secured, a funding gap persists.

She emphasised that the council therefore directs considerable additional sums from local council taxpayers toward road repair and upkeep.
