Henley MP asks Tesco CEO for trolley locking system after abandoned carts complaint

An Oxfordshire parliamentarian has contacted the chief executive of a major supermarket chain regarding the proliferation of shopping trolleys in a local town.

The correspondence addressed concerns about abandoned trollies bearing the retailer’s distinctive blue and red branding.

Freddie van Mierlo, representing Henley and Thame, submitted written communication to Ken Murphy at Tesco concerning the matter.

The letter, penned on September 8, outlined the issue of metallic shopping containers scattered throughout the town.

According to the correspondence, the MP personally gathered three trolleys and returned them to the Tesco store located on Reading Road.

During this endeavour, another trolley was observed being removed from the premises and transported back toward the town centre.

In the letter, the parliamentarian described how the scattered presence of the trollies created an unsightly appearance in an otherwise well-maintained town.

The efforts of local volunteers working to preserve the area’s aesthetic were being undermined by the presence of supermarket-branded carts left on streets and pathways, the correspondence stated.

The MP also addressed economic concerns, noting that the local economy depended heavily on tourism and retail sectors.

The negative impact of the trolleys’ poor appearance on these vital industries was highlighted in the communication.

A request was made for the implementation of an automated locking mechanism for trolleys to prevent their removal from the store grounds.

The letter acknowledged that certain residents might have legitimate reasons for moving the trollies, such as mobility limitations, yet emphasised that such removal should not be permitted regardless of circumstance.

The correspondence also expressed appreciation for the retailer’s contributions to the community, including financial support for local projects and food bank donations.

No response to the letter has yet been confirmed as received.
