A substantial road renewal initiative has been concluded ahead of its projected timeline.
The improvements were carried out along the A361 route passing through Banbury, spanning from the A422 Hennef Way junction to the B4100 Banbury Cross roundabout.
Construction commenced on 24 August and was finalised on 10 September, completing one shift earlier than anticipated.
According to Liz Leffman, Oxfordshire County Council’s portfolio holder responsible for highway construction and maintenance, the project held significant importance for the town as the road serves as a central thoroughfare.
She explained that the scheme represented a considerable undertaking, with the previous comprehensive resurfacing having occurred many years prior.
The completed works are expected to prolong the road’s lifespan by preventing moisture infiltration, decreasing the frequency of necessary repairs, improving surface grip for enhanced safety, and creating a smoother driving surface for greater comfort.
The initiative forms a component of an extensive highway enhancement strategy throughout Oxfordshire.
Between late May and early October, the council alongside its primary highways partner M Group have been addressing 38 locations, treating approximately 115,000 square metres of road surfaces across the county.
While road resurfacing delivers effective results, it entails substantial cost and temporary inconvenience, including necessary road closures and alternative routing arrangements.
In Oxfordshire, the resurfacing programme has been integrated with various preventive maintenance measures, aiming to maximise road quality and durability while minimising both expenditure and disruption to residents and travellers.
