Nearly 200 dining establishments across the United Kingdom are set to cease operations within the next several days as part of a significant corporate restructuring initiative undertaken by hospitality group Whitbread.
The closure programme will affect every remaining Beefeater and Brewers Fayre location throughout the country.
Company projections indicate approximately 3,800 positions will be eliminated as a result of these measures, though a company representative stated that efforts would be made to preserve as many employment opportunities as feasible.
The decision to wind down the branded restaurant division was initially disclosed by Whitbread in April.
Under the new strategic framework, the organisation intends to sell and lease back numerous freehold properties within its portfolio.
Earlier this summer, the Brewers Fayre establishment situated on Oxford Road in Bicester was publicly listed with an asking price of £950,000.
Furthermore, the Applecart Beefeater location at the Oxford South Milton Interchange was advertised for sale at a figure of £600,000.
Members of the restaurant chain’s loyalty programme received direct correspondence outlining the specific timeline for the shutdown.
The communication confirmed that Thursday 10 September 2026 would mark the final day of operations for all Beefeater venues across the United Kingdom.
The programme forms a central component of Whitbread’s revised five-year strategic plan, which targets cumulative cost reductions of £250 million.
The strategy involves pivoting toward a consolidated food and beverage approach that company executives contend will prove more economical and better aligned with the requirements of Premier Inn hotel guests.
Chief executive Dominic Paul addressed the rationale behind the transformation, noting that mounting operational expenses, including business rates and national insurance contributions, had prompted a comprehensive review of the company’s structure.
He emphasised that the evaluation process had been thorough and that all alternatives had received careful consideration.
The resulting strategy builds upon existing strengths while accelerating the company’s commercial direction.
According to Paul, the objective is to reposition Whitbread as a more profitable enterprise focused exclusively on hotel operations, delivering enhanced experiences for customers while generating improved returns for investors.
