Gail’s Bakery launches menopause action plan for UK staff

Gail’s Bakery has emerged as one of the initial major commercial enterprises to publish a comprehensive strategy addressing menopause support, anticipating upcoming regulatory requirements set to take effect the following year.

The retail bakery company, which operates multiple establishments throughout Oxford and the surrounding county region, maintains approximately 200 branches nationwide.

Outlets are located in Summertown and along Little Clarendon Street within Oxford, as well as in the towns of Witney, Thame, and Banbury.

The organisation has revised its human resources framework to foster a more supportive working environment for staff members, implementing adjustments aligned with provisions contained within the Employment Rights Act introduced by the current administration.

From next year, businesses employing more than 250 individuals will be required to document their approaches to assisting workers experiencing menopause, a condition characterised by symptoms such as hot flushes, disturbed sleep patterns, cognitive difficulties sometimes described as mental fog, and fluctuations in emotional state.

Miranda Burgum, the company’s people director, explained that the initiative aims to encourage open dialogue.

According to her, the objective involves helping colleagues recognise that menopause should not be considered a sensitive subject warranting avoidance.

Burgum, who is 52 years old, noted that she is currently experiencing menopause at a significant stage.

She recounted an incident from June 2023 when she addressed an internal corporate gathering and momentarily lost her initial remarks.

With approximately 450 attendees observing silently, she acknowledged her situation and requested a brief pause, subsequently receiving enthusiastic appreciation from the assembled personnel.

Following the event, colleagues expressed that increased discussion of the topic would prove beneficial.

During the previous year, sector representatives received cautions regarding a gradual departure of female workers, with estimates indicating that roughly one in ten either resigned from positions or took extended leave specifically due to menopause-related challenges.

NHS England guidance specifies that premature menopause typically manifests between the ages of 40 and 45.

Menopause signifies the cessation of menstrual cycles resulting from diminished hormone production.

This biological transition generally occurs between ages 45 and 55, though individual circumstances may result in earlier or later onset.

Factors including hereditary predisposition, surgical interventions, and underlying health conditions can influence the timing of menopause.

The health service defines menopause as having occurred following 12 consecutive months without any menstrual period.
