Memorial bench for Covid victims to be blessed at Oxford church on October 18

A commemorative bench honouring individuals who lost their lives during the coronavirus outbreak will be formally dedicated during a special congregation at St Andrew’s Church in Headington, Oxford.

The dedication ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, October 18, following the 10am Holy Communion service held to observe St Luke’s Day.

Reverend Emma Hopegood Jones, the incumbent at St Andrew’s, indicated that numerous healthcare employees continue to work through the aftermath of the health crisis, with many already finding solace in the churchyard grounds.

The place of worship has historically provided a welcoming environment for relatives and loved ones of individuals receiving treatment at nearby medical facilities, offering a refuge for contemplation and prayer.

During the period when the pandemic was at its peak, the church tower at St Andrew’s was illuminated to serve as a symbol of encouragement and optimism, remaining visible to patients and staff at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

The memorial seating will contribute to the churchyard’s role as an area representing divine compassion, hospitality and serenity, with members of the congregation expressing hope that it would provide a meaningful addition to the existing space.

The event is intended to accommodate individuals from any religious background or none, creating an opportunity for those wishing to commemorate the departed, express gratitude, or simply spend time in quiet reflection during the annual celebration of St Luke.

Saint Luke holds the position of patron saint of physicians, and the programme of worship will incorporate supplications for all medical professionals.

The Reverend Ruth Fitter, who serves as lead chaplain for Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has been invited to deliver the sermon.

The memorial inscription commemorates those who died during the COVID-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2022, referencing a biblical passage about God being near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).
