Savoir French bakery opens at historic 12 Turl Street, Oxford

Published on

A traditional French bakery has begun trading in Oxford’s historic centre following an extensive period of closure at the property.

Savoir has commenced operations at 12 Turl Street, occupying the unit formerly held by jeweller Rowell’s, which ceased trading there in December 2019.

The establishment provides an assortment of classic French loaves, viennoiserie and pâtisserie items, including croissants and other baked goods prepared fresh on the premises.

Initial customers have expressed satisfaction with the quality of items available since the launch.

The venture follows planning applications lodged two years previously by Lincoln College, the owner of the Grade II listed structure.

The submissions encompassed internal and external modifications, installation of a canopy and signage bearing the bakery’s name.

Planning documentation characterised the enterprise as a valuable complement to the existing specialist retail mix.

According to the records, introducing a new tenant would maintain the active use and protection of the historic premises, which originated during the late 1500s or early 1600s.

When consent was sought for the signage proposals, planning records indicated the scheme would respect the architectural character of the building while contributing to the commercial vitality of the city centre and acknowledging the area’s substantial heritage significance.

The launch concludes an extended period of vacancy for one of Oxford’s most visible retail locations and introduces another independent food retailer to the city centre.

Situated along one of Oxford’s most recognised commercial streets, the bakery is anticipated to draw local residents, university students and tourists seeking genuine French baked goods in the central district.
