An Oxford convenience store that once earned a marginal food safety score has now received the lowest possible hygiene rating after undergoing a business name change.
The establishment, located on Park End Street in the central area of the city, previously operated under a different trading name while selling various grocery items.
Municipal food safety officers conducted an initial inspection in March, evaluating the premises against strict hygiene criteria.
The assessment resulted in a one-out-of-five rating, with inspectors identifying significant deficiencies requiring immediate attention.
Specific concerns included the methods used to manage food safety protocols and the overall cleanliness of the premises and associated equipment.
The report noted that proper spatial arrangements, air circulation systems, sanitation stations for hand cleaning, and measures to control vermin were necessary to achieve acceptable hygiene standards.
Following a rebranding initiative, the business now trades under a different name and underwent a follow-up inspection on 5 August by the same regulatory team.
The subsequent evaluation uncovered that the previously flagged problems had not only persisted but had deteriorated further.
As a consequence, the establishment was issued with a zero-out-of-five hygiene classification, accompanied by instructions to implement urgent corrective measures.
The inspection report highlighted that the condition and maintenance of the physical infrastructure continued to demand immediate improvement.
Additionally, the systems responsible for ensuring food safety were deemed to require substantial enhancement.
Such protocols encompass procedures guaranteeing that all food items offered for sale are safe for consumption, verification that employees understand proper food handling practices, and confidence that the business can sustain appropriate standards going forward.
The sanitary preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling, and storage methods employed at the premises were also flagged as areas needing attention.
The venue had originally received its one-star assessment during June 2024.
