The Oxford Canal provided the backdrop for a vibrant celebration of local heritage, entertainment, and community spirit on Saturday, September 19.
Families, local residents, and tourists descended upon Aristotle Lane Recreation Ground and the nearby canal moorings for the annual festival organised by Oxford Canal Heritage.
The event honoured the waterway’s historical importance and aimed to generate donations for the restoration of a community narrowboat project.
A representative from the organising body noted that the celebration drew hundreds of attendees to enjoy free entertainment and activities throughout the day.
The gathering featured a diverse programme of attractions including musical performances, creative workshops, guided towpath walks, boat excursions, and a special children’s canal Olympics.
A canine competition, face painting for younger visitors, and an inflatable play area provided additional entertainment options.
Performers and authors appeared at the gathering, with The Story Museum’s marquee featuring appearances from Neill Cameron, Peter Chand, David Gibb, Mark Haddon, Adeola Sokunbi, and Wendy Shearer.
The canal banks were filled with food vendors, community information stalls, and historic vessels on display as guests took in the festive atmosphere.
Organisers indicated the event sought to increase awareness of the waterway’s significance to the local community and encourage its preservation.
The previous year’s gathering attracted approximately 2,000 visitors, and this edition aimed to strengthen bonds between residents while highlighting the canal’s role in the city.
