A breast cancer awareness fundraiser is set to take place in Witney town centre this Saturday, marking its 26th anniversary.
The annual Witney in Pink Day has become a significant community tradition since originating as a modest stall in 2000.
This year’s gathering will carry particular significance as it marks the first occasion the event has proceeded without its originator, Jeanne Chattoe, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 76.
The occasion is arranged by the Witney Action Group on behalf of the Against Breast Cancer charity.
Contributions amassed over the past quarter-century have exceeded £300,000, with funds directed specifically toward investigations into secondary breast cancer.
Alex Simpson, who chairs the organising committee, expressed the group’s determination to preserve the occasion in honour of its founder.
The annual gathering was described as an uplifting and festive celebration that consistently attracts tremendous community backing.
The formal commencement will occur at 10am along Witney High Street, conducted by Jeanne Chattoe’s spouse Mark alongside their daughter Lucy Bowden.
The day’s activities encompass a convoy of pink-decorated vehicles departing from The Windrush Inn at 11.30am, retail outlets featuring pink window displays, a substantial raffle, a cake stall, and instrumental performances by the Horns of Plenty brass group from Oxford.
Lynn Tierney, who established the Pins and Needles collective, noted that with family approval, the event’s primary topper had been created as a commemoration of Jeanne.
The decorative piece incorporates crocheted frames displaying images of the late organiser, serving as a recognition of her considerable contributions.
Those wishing to contribute homemade bakes may deliver them to The Shake Shop or the main stall from 8.30am on the day.
