A city-wide cultural event welcomed thousands of people to explore historical locations and lesser-known attractions across Oxford.

The annual showcase occurred on September 12 and 13, offering complimentary entry to more than 120 sites throughout the urban area.

The two-day programme was coordinated by the Oxford Preservation Trust, which arranged behind-the-scenes access to educational institutions, architectural landmarks, and community venues alongside guided walks and interactive workshops.

The chief executive of the organising body commented that the initiative enabled local people to experience distinctive locations throughout the city, from lesser-known establishments to familiar landmarks encountered during daily routines.

Appreciation was extended to property owners who participated by opening their premises and to the dedicated volunteers who contributed significant effort throughout the event.

Support from funding partners including the university, a local educational institution, and the municipal authority’s community programme was also acknowledged.

Notable inclusions in the programme featured the library at Lincoln College, situated within a deconsecrated place of worship, and a recently inaugurated humanities centre.

Attendees participated in a guided walk around Osney Island commemorating 175 years since the area’s establishment, while the main library complex hosted an exhibition exploring avian species.

Multiple higher education institutions opened their grounds to the public, with several colleges welcoming substantial visitor numbers.

One institution welcomed almost 7,000 guests, providing garden walks, musical performances, displays, and an opportunity to meet a trained bird of prey.

At the municipal museum, archivists presented historical documentation from civic collections, featuring architectural designs for an abandoned industrial project.

A cinema venue staged fully booked screenings of archive material documenting local automotive manufacturing heritage.

Family-oriented activities included operating historic printing equipment at a major library venue and textile printing workshops conducted by a creative professional within a historic fortification.

An emergency services facility permitted guests to examine a fire appliance and interact with operational equipment, while adjacent areas offered waterway-inspired creative sessions.

A preserved military installation from the mid-twentieth century hosted more than 350 attendees for guided walks delivered by community historians.

Visitors viewed a brief documentary recounting the site’s past and examined objects unearthed during recent archaeological investigations, with refreshments served outdoors.

Live music contributed to the overall atmosphere, with choral performances presented at a college and a brass ensemble entertaining audiences at a converted correctional facility.

The coordinating organisation, established in 1927, maintains responsibility for extensive green areas distributed throughout the metropolitan zone and its surroundings.
