Sounds of the City exhibition opens at Museum of Oxford celebrating city’s music scene

Published on

Oxford’s musical legacy has been celebrated through a new exhibition examining the city’s influential contribution to popular music across multiple decades.

The Museum of Oxford is hosting Sounds of the City, an extensive display showcasing objects, memorabilia and accounts that document Oxford’s music history.

The exhibition covers genres ranging from indie rock and punk through to reggae and folk traditions, with particular attention paid to the grassroots scene of the 1990s.

A milestone commemoration of the 1997 BBC Radio 1 Sound City Oxford event, marking three decades since that landmark broadcast introduced Oxford’s musical talent to listeners nationwide, forms a central element of the display.

The showcase also examines the venues, festivals and independent record companies that shaped the city’s musical character, alongside profiles of contemporary artists who represent that tradition.

Curatorial duties were undertaken by Autumn Neagle, who previously assisted with operations at Nick Moorbath’s Cowley Road establishment The Zodiac, and Paul Bonham, who managed bookings and contributed to Truck festival’s development in Steventon as a launchpad for emerging acts.

Among the items loaned by local enthusiasts is material gathered by Chipping Norton-based photographer Marc West, whose documentation of the Oxford scene spans decades.

West’s collection encompasses vintage posters, admission tickets, performance setlists and discarded drum equipment accumulated across more than twenty years of photographing local performances.

West has stated that he preserved the artefacts without knowing their eventual purpose until learning of plans by Neagle and Bonham to establish a museum display honouring the city’s musical heritage.

The curators approached him, and the collection now forms part of the exhibition.

The display additionally covers prominent community events such as the Cowley Road Carnival and the area’s longstanding Reggae Christmas programming.

A supplementary schedule of activities includes intimate live performances, midday discussions, guided walks, film presentations and extended evening opening hours at the venue.

Proposals exist for events at Modern Art Oxford and a potential larger presentation at Oxford Town Hall.

The initiative also incorporates outreach to local youth through collaborative workshops led by musicians and creative practitioners based in Oxford.

West described the exhibition as offering a compact yet comprehensive perspective on Oxford’s music scene through the years.

He expressed hope that it might motivate future musicians and performers.

West noted that numerous significant acts emerged from the city during the 1990s and 2000s, and Oxford continues to hold considerable respect in the music community.

Susan Brown, leader of Oxford City Council, voiced approval for the initiative.

She highlighted Oxford’s historical significance as home to several renowned acts and expressed confidence that visitors would discover local bands represented in their own music collections.

The exhibition brings together this diverse musical heritage, demonstrating how sound has shaped the city’s character and continues to motivate emerging creators.
