Banbury’s town centre is set to benefit from enhanced street cleaning services over the coming months.
The initiative, financed by Cherwell District Council via its Local Area Development Fund, commenced this month and will operate as a trial until spring 2027.
Among the measures introduced are additional cleaning hours at weekends and two intensive cleaning operations, representing the initial stage of the Banbury town centre revitalisation Look and Feel programme.
According to Councillor Lesley McLean, leader of Cherwell District Council, a well-maintained and inviting town centre holds significant importance for local residents, businesses and visitors.
The additional funding will enhance the appearance and atmosphere of the town centre during peak periods, particularly on weekends and in the lead-up to the Christmas season.
The proposal was formulated based on input from the Banbury Area Oversight Group and received approval from the council’s executive in July.
Financial support of £21,500 has been allocated from the council’s Local Area Development Fund for the 2026/27 financial year.
Councillor Ian Middleton, portfolio holder for housing and greener communities, stated that maintaining a clean, welcoming and attractive town centre requires a collaborative effort.
Street cleansing teams dedicate considerable effort throughout the year, often without public recognition, and receive backing from various community groups, businesses and local partners who demonstrate pride in the town.
The improved cleaning service will target periods when foot traffic is heaviest, including the active pre-Christmas shopping period.
The objective is to enhance overall cleanliness, decrease instances of littering and establish a more pleasant setting for both visitors and local businesses.
