Local authority officials have endorsed efforts to address a longstanding issue involving vacant Ministry of Defence residential buildings.
West Oxfordshire District Council has voiced concerns regarding deserted dwellings situated on Marlborough Crescent and Becketts Close in Long Hanborough.
These residences have remained unoccupied for multiple years and have attracted reports of nuisance behaviour, including alleged substance misuse and drinking activities.
Elected members voted in favour of a proposal put forward by Councillor Roger Faulkner and supported by Councillor Toby Morris, demanding increased transparency from the Ministry of Defence regarding the fate of these properties.
Residents have displayed considerable tolerance, according to Councillor Faulkner, who expressed that the properties have now remained vacant for an excessive duration.
The backing from all councillors demonstrates that answers and concrete measures are required.
The district council is urging the Ministry of Defence to clarify whether the buildings will undergo restoration, be brought back into use, or be cleared away and replaced, while also seeking a defined schedule for any intended work.
Councillor Toby Morris noted that it was encouraging to see support from members across the political spectrum.
He stated that regardless of what ultimate solution emerges for these dwellings, permitting them to remain empty and deteriorating annually cannot represent a viable approach.
Councillor Liam Walker additionally endorsed the proposal, highlighting the necessity for a resolution.
He pointed out that with ongoing discussion about the requirement for additional housing, it makes little sense for existing properties owned by the Government to remain unused for extended periods.
The council intends to pursue clarification on the Ministry of Defence’s intentions and obtain guarantees that the buildings will not continue to stand empty without end.
