Tower Hill Cemetery Chapel welcomed visitors during a recent heritage celebration organised by Witney Town Council.
The event, staged as part of the Heritage Open Days programme, attracted more than one hundred local people to the historic site the previous weekend.
Displays and guided walks allowed attendees to discover the background of the chapel and burial ground.
Family-friendly activities formed part of the programme, ensuring younger visitors could engage with the venue’s history alongside adults.
A Town Council representative noted that residents from diverse age groups and backgrounds attended to view the exhibitions and explore the prepared cemetery walks.
The junior-focused trail guided participants past notable features throughout the grounds, while the adult route highlighted significant figures connected to Witney’s development, including Thomas Early and Alice Maud Batt.
Archive materials were exhibited, among them the cemetery’s original burial register.
The earliest interment recorded in the document dates from 1857.
Early inhabitants’ occupations were documented in handwritten form, revealing professions such as Blanket Weaver and Workhouse Worker.
The Council representative expressed gratitude to the large turnout of more than one hundred attendees, stating that volunteers enjoyed sharing the historical experience with the community.
