Deliberations are under way at Oxford Crown Court in the case of a 35-year-old man facing allegations of physical violence against his former partner.
Neoklid Demiraj, whose address is given as Sandy Lane in Oxford, stands accused of carrying out six separate incidents of alleged abuse between late 2024 and March of this year.
He has entered pleas of not guilty to four charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two charges of intentional strangulation.
Proceedings resumed on September 17 when both counsel delivered their closing arguments and the presiding judge provided the jury with a summary of the evidence.
The panel subsequently retired to consider its verdicts.
Earlier in the trial, on September 15, the court heard testimony from the complainant.
The jury was shown footage captured by Demiraj himself while the pair were travelling in a vehicle, with the woman seated beside him.
On the recording, the complainant could be heard making inflammatory remarks, including threats to destroy his life and claims that he had damaged her relationship with her family.
She was subsequently observed making a striking motion towards him.
When questioned about her conduct during the incident, the complainant stated that her behaviour stemmed from anger and that such actions were out of character for her, placing responsibility on the defendant.
Testimony addressed the consequences she experienced as a result of the allegations, with the complainant describing significant difficulty in rebuilding her life.
Harriet Lawrence, presenting the prosecution case, outlined the accusations for the jury.
According to Ms Lawrence, the Crown contends that the defendant subjected his former partner to physical assaults, while the defence maintains that none of the alleged attacks occurred and that the complainant frequently inflicted harm upon herself.
The court was informed that the initial allegation arose in December 2024, following the complainant’s discovery that Demiraj had fathered a child of which she had been unaware.
A dispute erupted between them, during which the prosecution claims Demiraj struck her arm five times.
It is further alleged that he applied pressure to her eye while she was lying on the ground.
Ms Lawrence told the jury that the woman called out for assistance and responded by throwing a piece of furniture at him.
On November 14, another confrontation allegedly took place, during which Demiraj is said to have strangled the complainant.
On December 9, following a separate argument, he is alleged to have punched her in the facial area.
On February 13 of this year, the pair were together in a motor vehicle.
Ms Lawrence explained that the complainant harboured suspicions about Demiraj and attempted to access his mobile phone.
According to the prosecution, he responded by striking her in the eye region.
On another occasion, when the pair were travelling to see Demiraj’s relatives, the complainant indicated that she did not wish to proceed with the visit.
Ms Lawrence stated that the defendant responded by seizing her by the throat and applying pressure.
She subsequently attended Cowley Police Station, where Demiraj was taken into custody.
During questioning at that time, Demiraj offered a minimal account, stating that the pair had merely argued.
The case remains ongoing.
