West Oxfordshire Man, 27, Starts Reusable Moving Crate Business After Spinal Surgery

Published on

A 27-year-old businessman from West Oxfordshire has established a company offering reusable moving containers as an alternative to traditional cardboard boxes.

Richard Howe founded Crate Crew, a rental service providing stackable plastic crates designed for multiple uses.

The venture was conceived following personal experience with a spinal condition that necessitated career adjustment.

Having observed an American entrepreneur operating a comparable model through social media, the businessman investigated whether similar services were available in the United Kingdom.

Market research revealed that while occasional alternatives existed, they were scarce and frequently complicated by excessive delivery charges and protracted quotation procedures.

The former landscaping student pursued alternative professional paths after undergoing a complete spinal fusion operation at age 17 to address scoliosis.

The procedure resulted in persistent discomfort that rendered physically demanding work impractical, leading to extended employment within the retail sector before transitioning to online commerce.

Earlier this year, he established full-time self-employment through internet-based sales.

With additional capacity available, he sought a commercial opportunity compatible with principles of resource efficiency and requiring no physical inventory storage.

The enterprise emerged from this period of evaluation.

Environmental considerations were identified as a primary benefit.

Research conducted by eBay indicates that British households utilise approximately eight million cardboard boxes monthly for residential relocations.

Given annual figures of between 1.9 and 2.1 million individuals changing residence, and referencing information from the Oxfordshire Data Hub, the company estimates that Oxfordshire alone requires over 80,000 moving boxes each month.

The containers comprise recycled polypropylene materials and are engineered for repeated utilisation across hundreds of cycles prior to eventual recycling.

Their construction provides durability and moisture protection, with each unit capable of supporting weights up to 25 kilograms.

Integrated labelling compartments and security seals are incorporated, while certain service packages incorporate transportation equipment to facilitate movement.

Future development intentions include expanding inventory levels, implementing promotional activities, and potentially introducing specialised wardrobe containers to streamline clothing relocation.
