MP Charlie Maynard opens new science and art block at Wood Green School

Wood Green School in Witney marked a milestone on Friday with the official opening of a new educational facility.

The Green House, a purpose-built complex designed to accommodate science and art instruction, was formally inaugurated at an afternoon ceremony that drew a cross-section of community figures.

Charlie Maynard, the constituency’s Member of Parliament, performed ceremonial duties at the event.

The politician had traveled directly from Westminster after fulfilling parliamentary obligations earlier that day.

The newly constructed building comprises eight classrooms dedicated to scientific and artistic disciplines.

Construction work on the project spanned fifteen months.

The facility incorporates environmentally sustainable features, including photovoltaic panels, an air source heat pump system, and nesting accommodations for swifts and bats integrated into the exterior walls.

The building’s name emerged from consultations involving the wider school community.

Phil Andrews, a parent with children enrolled in years 9 and 13, was credited with originating the concept.

The designation was selected to reflect both the structure’s environmental credentials and an educational philosophy of nurturing growth and development.

The imagery of a greenhouse, which cultivates young plants, resonated with the school’s identity as an institution that nurtures its pupils.

The inauguration ceremony featured musical entertainment from the school’s swing band.

Among those present were Jane Doughty, serving as Mayor of Witney, and Dan Levy, representing Oxfordshire County Council at the event.

School leadership was represented at the formal proceedings by Ann Davenport, who heads the art department, and Gareth Davies, who leads the science faculty.

Both participated in cutting the ceremonial ribbon alongside representatives from other parts of the school community.

Phil Andrews undertook ribbon-cutting duties on behalf of the parent body.

Student representatives Amy Block, Lottie Harris and Gabe Watt, serving as head students, also participated in the formal proceedings.

Other individuals involved in the event included Maria Grindley, who coordinates the parent-teacher association and oversees school gardening activities.

Nathan Thomas, chief executive of the Acer Trust educational charitable trust, attended the occasion.

Will Steele represented Barnwood Construction, the firm engaged as principal contractor for the building project.

Liz Jones, chair of the governing body, completed the formal group.

The chair of governors addressed those gathered, speaking of the collaborative approach that had characterised the project and the resulting quality of the finished structure.

The headteacher expressed appreciation to all who had contributed their time and resources to the initiative.

School representatives emphasised the institution’s commitment to engaging with its local area and noted that the opening demonstrated this ethos in action.

The new accommodation was described as an impressive addition to the site that would serve pupils for many years to come.

Leadership viewed the occasion as a defining moment in the establishment’s history.

A student representative spoke of the inspirational nature of the new environment and the positive atmosphere it created for learning.

One pupil reflected on the significance of completing their final year of schooling within the upgraded facilities, while also noting that future cohorts would benefit from the modern spaces for years beyond.
