Oxford rail station passengers will regain vehicle access without incurring camera-related penalties following Botley Road’s imminent reopening.
The route, which has remained inaccessible since April 2023, is scheduled to resume traffic flow at dawn on Sunday.
A temporary charge was imposed in October after Botley Road’s closure forced all station-bound traffic along Abingdon Road, where an automatic number plate recognition system on Thames Street monitored entry.
Drivers without appropriate authorisation were required to pay a five-pound fee during daytime hours.
County council representatives have verified that station forecourt access for passenger collection and drop-off will be available without activating the Hythe Bridge Street camera system.
A long-term parking facility exists on Becket Street, though some travellers continue to use the forecourt directly.
Network Rail officials indicated the road would open around five in the morning to accommodate the first bus service.
The pedestrian walkway adjacent to the station platform is likewise expected to become operational in conjunction with the road’s reopening.
Highways authorities confirmed that Westgate Centre shoppers travelling from Botley Road through Frideswide Square to the Oxpens Road car park entrance would not trigger any traffic filter penalties.
The current roadworks represent preparatory work for a proposed western access point to the railway station.
During February, installation of a replacement rail bridge was completed, with plans for an additional platform five intended to strengthen connections on the East West Rail corridor.
Funding approval for the western entrance remains pending.
Delays throughout the construction period contributed to substantial cost escalations, with the original one hundred and sixty-one million pound estimate now standing at a minimum of two hundred and thirty-seven million pounds.
Independent traders experienced considerable financial harm, with several businesses compelled to cease operations entirely, while neighbourhood residents endured prolonged disruption and noise pollution.
John Howson, a former Liberal Democrat county councillor residing near the station, has tracked Network Rail’s activities, including recent surface works close to the rail bridge.
He expressed concern regarding the decision to halt western entrance construction, suggesting that parallel progress could have delivered platform five and associated facilities by now.
County council representatives clarified that drivers approaching Oxford from Botley Road could reach both Westgate Oxford and the railway station without receiving camera-enforced fines.
A spokesperson explained that the council’s traffic filter pilot would replace the temporary congestion charge from Monday, maintaining filter locations at six identical sites and preserving the permit framework.
The primary distinction involves the elimination of the five-pound payment option for private vehicles.
With Botley Road operational, every Oxford destination becomes reachable by car without traversing a filter.
Alternative routing might occasionally be necessary but would frequently prove unnecessary.
Vehicles displaying valid permits alongside all other classes of transport could continue passing through filters unrestricted.
