Botley Road is scheduled to reopen to vehicular traffic this weekend, according to an official announcement from Network Rail.
The major thoroughfare has been inaccessible for more than three years at the railway station location due to repeated postponements of bridge construction work.
Network Rail has now confirmed that no additional delays are anticipated, with the reopening scheduled for September 20 just days away.
The route will serve as the sole vehicle access point to the Westgate centre car park without requiring passage through a traffic management scheme.
The road closure at the rail bridge commenced in April 2023 as part of a substantial upgrade programme for Oxford railway station.
The reopening had previously been targeted for August 31 of this year.
A Network Rail representative stated that Botley Road would resume traffic flow on Sunday.
Both newly constructed walkways were intended to open concurrently with the road reopening, though confirmation regarding whether the northern walkway would be operational at the same time was expected later in the week.
Oxfordshire Councillor Anna Railton inspected the road prior to the official reopening.
She acknowledged that the extended closure had caused considerable inconvenience to local residents and businesses over several years but expressed satisfaction that traffic access would be restored.
She noted that the reopening would bring enhanced facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, improved bus services with standard double-decker vehicles now able to pass beneath the bridge, and anticipated improvements to rail services.
She also indicated anticipation for subsequent phases of the station upgrade programme.
Throughout the project, multiple setbacks have occurred.
Expenditure on the works has increased from an initial projection of £161 million to approximately £237 million.
The scheme has been referred to the National Audit Office by the MP for Oxford West and Abingdon.
Two new pedestrian and cycle pathways will operate beneath the bridge on both sides of the road.
The southern walkway and cycleway has already been completed and is currently operational between Frideswide Square and Botley Road.
Network Rail has yet to publish a schedule for construction of the proposed new western entrance to the station, nor has the organisation provided information regarding funding arrangements for this element of the project.
Transport sector analyst Paul Clifton, who served as BBC transport correspondent for three decades and contributes regularly to Rail Magazine, suggested that funding for the western entrance remained uncertain due to broader financial pressures affecting the rail network.
He indicated that these pressures were largely attributable to expenditure requirements associated with HS2.
Prior to Botley Road reopening, Oxford will experience four consecutive nights of closures affecting various road sections.
Closures will operate between 8pm and 6am.
On Monday, September 14, the road will be shut between Mill Street and Ferry Hinksey Road, with surface work scheduled between Mill Street and Bridge Street.
The following night, the same section will remain closed with resurfacing taking place between Bridge Street and Ferry Hinksey Road.
During both these evenings, services from Seacourt Park and Ride will terminate at Ferry Hinksey Road.
On Wednesday and Thursday, September 17, overnight closures will affect the section between Ferry Hinksey Road and Binsey Lane, with works spanning the entire closure length.
Both nights will see all bus services conclude at Seacourt Park and Ride, and no vehicle access to or from Ferry Hinksey Road will be possible.
