Oxford graduate Beth Eames reaches Great British Sewing Bee final

A former Oxford University engineering student is through to the championship round of the BBC’s amateur sewing competition.

Beth Eames, 24, completed undergraduate and doctoral studies in engineering at St Hilda’s College before taking a position as a mechanical engineering consultant within the health technology industry.

The competitor has progressed through a 10-week selection process to claim one of three finalist spots in the twelfth season of the programme, scheduled for broadcast on BBC One at 8pm on Tuesday, September 15.

Throughout the contest, participants have faced the series’ established format of three distinct challenges: a pattern-cutting task, a garment transformation task, and a custom-measurement tailoring task.

This season introduced several fresh thematic categories, encompassing colour and textile patterns, Mexican culture, celebrated authors, clothing construction techniques, and summer fashion.

Notable assignments included converting outdoor grilling garments into everyday carry items, while other episodes referenced books, classic wardrobe pieces and global traditions.

Dr Eames has proven herself among the most capable participants, accumulating two weekly garment honours and consistently impressing the judging panel of Patrick Grant and Esme Young.

During the penultimate episode, she attracted favourable commentary for a jacket crafted from sustainable plant-derived leather in a green finish, with particular acknowledgment of her stitching precision and armhole construction.

Her interest in garment-making began during her adolescent years, and she has previously discussed her experience customising attire to accommodate her scoliosis condition.

The contestant will vie for the championship title alongside Anna, representing North Yorkshire, and Emma Morwood, a professional classical vocalist from Scotland.

In an online statement marking her advancement, St Hilda’s College described the television experience as having provided valuable lessons in fabric work, production processes and handling performance pressures.
