A space technology enterprise has obtained a £300 million investment to enhance its satellite production capabilities and earth observation offerings.
Open Cosmos, established in 2015 and headquartered at Harwell Campus, has emerged as one of Europe’s leading satellite producers, having achieved profitability over the past five years while maintaining an unblemished record of mission completions.
The capital injection will enable the company to increase satellite output and expedite the provision of data and connectivity solutions derived from orbital assets.
Speaking about the development, Rafel Jorda Siquier, the company’s founder and chief executive, explained that orbital infrastructure now ranks among the most essential systems for modern society, comparable to energy grids, telecommunications networks, and transportation routes.
Both governmental bodies and commercial organisations demand dependable communications and operational intelligence delivered through robust platforms.
However, hardware alone does not constitute sufficient value.
The genuine benefit emerges from analytical insights that convey terrestrial conditions as they unfold and the global networking capability required to transmit such information effectively.
By integrating satellite networks with protected communications and artificial intelligence-driven analytics, the company constructs an ecosystem that converts orbital observations into actionable intelligence for clients across public and private sectors.
The new capital provides the means to advance this strategic objective, fulfilling production commitments already secured from governments and major corporations seeking dependable, high-specification spacecraft and autonomous data solutions.
The financing initiative attracted backing from a consortium of European investors, namely Lightrock, ETF Partners, and the Institut Català de Finances, alongside contributions from Entrepreneurs First and a pair of substantial overseas pension funds.
Additional support originated from the Convex Group, the National Security Strategic Investment Fund, Phoenix Court, and Claret Capital Partners.
The investment will support expansion of three primary platforms: ConnectedCosmos, OpenConstellation, and DataCosmos, each designed to furnish real-time analytical intelligence and connectivity capabilities using space-based assets.
The business currently maintains four production facilities situated throughout Europe and possesses the capacity to complete assembly of a single spacecraft within a single day.
The firm’s advanced OpenConstellation platform enables earth observation and situational awareness within approximately 30 minutes, representing a substantial improvement over conventional delivery windows that previously extended to two days.
The workforce comprises almost 400 staff members distributed across operations in the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, and Greece.
Ashish Puri, a partner at Lightrock, remarked that the firm was honoured to spearhead the funding round and assist this European enterprise during its next phase of expansion within the space economy.
The activities of Open Cosmos and the broader orbital infrastructure sector provide foundational support for worldwide energy, communications, defence, and environmental sustainability initiatives.
The company’s exceptional mission performance, production capacity, and technical knowledge establish a credible foundation for attaining international leadership within a sector of considerable significance.
Patrick Sheehan, managing partner at ETF Partners, noted that the management group had demonstrated the level of aspiration necessary to transform technical competencies into meaningful commercial outcomes.
