Christ Church Cathedral Choir marks 500th anniversary with US tour ending at Carnegie Hall

Published on

Christ Church Cathedral Choir from Oxford is set to appear at Carnegie Hall as part of its quincentenary observances.

The ensemble will undertake a nine-day American tour commencing on September 25 and concluding on October 4.

The itinerary encompasses performances at notable musical and ecclesiastical venues across the eastern seaboard.

The opening concert will take place at St Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral in Minneapolis.

Subsequent appearances will include Washington National Cathedral, Princeton University Chapel, and St Paul’s Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The tour will conclude with a performance at Zankel Hall within Carnegie Hall’s New York premises.

Peter Holder, the organist and director of music for the choir, expressed enthusiasm about introducing Christ Church’s choral heritage to American audiences.

The visit coincides with a landmark year of anniversary festivities for the ensemble.

Presenting five centuries of musical tradition to new listeners and the American branch of the Christ Church community was described as an appropriate way to mark the occasion.

The programme will feature compositions covering a five-hundred-year period.

Works will include pieces by John Taverner, who served as the inaugural Organist and Director of Music at the college, alongside a newly commissioned cantata by Nico Muhly.

The choir traces its origins to 1526, established by Thomas Wolsey before being incorporated into Christ Church by King Henry VIII in 1545.

Since that time, the ensemble has maintained a continuous tradition of daily choral worship and has earned international recognition through its recordings, concert appearances, and international tours.

Audiences are welcome to attend performances throughout the American tour.

Former members of Christ Church may wish to participate in reunion events scheduled during the visit.
