Police investigation after driver altercation at Bicester asylum protest

A demonstration in Bicester that had remained largely orderly descended into disorder following a confrontation between a vehicle operator and those taking part in the gathering.

The incident occurred amid a series of protests opposing proposals to accommodate 1,256 single male asylum seekers at the Ministry of Defence facility in Bicester.

Online footage captured the moment when tensions rose after a man drove through Claremont car park in the vicinity of the town centre.

Members of the assembled crowd were heard shouting provocative language at the driver as he left his vehicle, including remarks that have been widely condemned as racist, while he responded with offensive terminology.

A member of the protest group intervened by restraining the man in an attempt to calm the situation.

The video evidence appears to show the driver throwing a punch before police officers intervened and released the man from the restraint, subsequently escorting him to a police vehicle.

Thames Valley Police confirmed awareness of the demonstration and stated that officers had been deployed to observe proceedings and communicate with participants.

A force spokesperson indicated that an altercation unfolded during the protest and that officers responded promptly to restore order.

enquiries remain active to determine the full circumstances of the incident, though no individuals have been detained at this juncture.

A ratchet tool was recovered at the location and forms part of the continuing investigation.

The force acknowledged considerable online discussion surrounding the matter and urged members of the public to refrain from speculation while inquiries proceed.

Police have emphasised that their focus remains on conducting a comprehensive and unbiased investigation while upholding the right to peaceful protest and ensuring community safety.

Paula Ewers, who organised the demonstration, characterised the motorist’s conduct as aggressive.

She disputed allegations that protesters had goaded the man by striking his vehicle, dousing him with liquid, or spitting at him or his female passenger.

Nevertheless, she expressed strong condemnation of racist language attributed to a content creator who filmed the confrontation, stating that such remarks were neither endorsed by march organisers nor by local residents participating in the events.

She noted that the objectionable language originated solely from the individual recording the incident.

The group has conducted multiple demonstrations, all of which she described as peaceful.

She expressed regret that the behaviour of one individual and the language used by the video creator had overshadowed the efforts and solidarity built over seven weeks.

According to Ms Ewers, participants in the protests now feel apprehensive about exercising their right to peaceful assembly.

She highlighted that the majority of those attending consist of individuals over fifty years of age, families with young children, and people with disabilities, describing these as vulnerable members of the community who now fear potential aggression for expressing their concerns.
