A seasonal influenza immunisation campaign has been launched by NHS South East, with expectant mothers and young children identified as priority groups for protection ahead of autumn and winter.
The annual vaccination programme commenced on 1 September, targeting those considered most vulnerable to severe respiratory illness during the colder period.
Caroline Reid, who serves as director of commissioning at NHS South East, emphasised the significant burden influenza places on healthcare services annually.
She noted that young children and pregnant women experience particularly high rates of illness and hospitalisation, which has prompted efforts to maximise participation when invitations are issued.
Reid highlighted that research demonstrates convenient access substantially increases vaccination rates.
Consequently, NHS teams operating throughout the South East region have been expanding methods to deliver immunisations directly to communities.
These include facilities such as family centres, early years settings, educational institutions, general practitioner surgeries, community pharmacies, and maternity services.
During the previous campaign, more than 3.3 million residents across the South East received influenza protection, securing the region the second-highest vaccination coverage figure across the country.
Health officials expressed determination to build upon this achievement during the approaching winter season and safeguard additional members of the population before widespread influenza transmission begins.
Medical professionals warn that influenza may result in severe health consequences including lung inflammation and bronchial infections, with heightened risk for young children, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions.
Currently, immunisations are accessible to pregnant women, children aged two and three years, pupils of school age, and adolescents falling within qualifying clinical risk categories.
From 1 October, further eligibility will extend to individuals aged 65 years and above, adults within clinical risk groups, informal carers, residential care occupants, patient-facing health and social care employees, and those without stable housing.
A notable expansion this year introduces complimentary immunisation for anyone aged 16 years or older who is sleeping rough or residing in homeless accommodation facilities.
In Chesham, a specialised clinic catering specifically to pregnant women will operate from a family centre on 3 September, with the objective of enhancing accessibility and convenience for this demographic.
The Thames Valley area will reintroduce a pilot initiative providing nursery-based vaccinations.
This programme delivers influenza immunisation directly to early years settings affiliated with primary schools across Buckinghamshire.
Parents wishing to arrange appointments for children aged two and three years may do so through their general practitioner from 1 September.
Community pharmacy provision for this age group commences from 1 October.
Additional vaccination locations encompass GP surgeries, pharmacies, school immunisation teams, and various NHS providers, with availability determined by individual eligibility criteria.
