Garsington church secures £13,000 for 800-year-old church repairs

A historic place of worship dating to the 12th century is set to undergo essential restoration work following the securing of significant funding.

St Mary’s Church in Garsington, Oxfordshire, constructed in 1160, will receive repairs to deteriorating stonework surrounding its chancel windows after obtaining two separate grants.

The first award amounts to £9,386 and comes from the Wolfson Foundation’s Fabric Repair Grant programme, while an additional £3,679 has been allocated by the Headley Trust.

Both grants were channelled through the National Churches Trust, which assists places of worship across the country with maintenance and preservation needs.

The National Churches Trust, an organisation dedicated to supporting church buildings, expressed satisfaction at being able to contribute to the preservation of this medieval structure.

A representative noted that the repairs represent an initial phase that will ultimately allow for the installation of accessible toilet facilities, addressing a practical need for visitors and regular users of the building.

The restoration work will shield significant heritage from further decay while maintaining the structure’s availability for residents of the surrounding area.

This funding forms part of a broader initiative distributing in excess of £750,000 to facilitate urgent repair work at places of worship throughout the United Kingdom.

The programme aims to address critical maintenance issues at dozens of churches experiencing structural problems or deterioration.

The building holds Grade II listed status, reflecting its architectural and historical significance.

Beyond its religious function, the church operates as a focal point for local activities, hosting art sessions, morning gatherings, and educational programmes for children.

Its position alongside well-used public footpaths also makes it a frequent resting point for those exploring the countryside.

Anticipated residential expansion within the parish, comprising approximately 1,800 new dwellings, has prompted consideration of how the church might accommodate greater community demand.

Several parties have begun examining ways to enhance the building’s accessibility and versatility to serve a growing population.

The treasurer at the Garsington institution, Richard Jeffery, described the news as tremendously positive for both the congregation and the wider community.

He explained that securing such sums presents considerable difficulty for rural churches with modest congregations, making this support particularly valuable.

The work will target some of the most architecturally significant elements of the ancient structure, preventing continued decay while preserving a safe and inviting environment for all who visit.

Jeffery further noted that the building serves multiple purposes beyond regular worship, functioning as a venue for social occasions, commemorations, and community gatherings.

He expressed confidence that the intervention would allow present and future generations to continue benefiting from a space that has anchored village life for centuries.

The local parish council actively participated in the application process, recognising the church’s importance to community cohesion.

The council’s chair, Chris Wright, conveyed strong satisfaction at the outcome of the funding bid, emphasising that the church has occupied a central position in village affairs for eight hundred years.
