Brain injury support programme pilots across South Central probation services

Published on

A brain injury support programme is assisting individuals serving probation sentences to rebuild their lives.

The initiative, developed by Headway UK and piloted in the South Central region, targets people on probation who are living with the effects of brain injuries.

Participants receive guidance on understanding how brain injuries affect them and develop practical approaches for managing everyday tasks, maintaining relationships and achieving long-term stability.

The programme consists of four modules addressing brain injury awareness, emotional and behavioural management, interpersonal communication, and establishing sustainable routines.

Eight individuals within the HMPPS South Central area successfully completed the pilot phase, indicating the potential for similar targeted approaches to improve outcomes for those dealing with neurological conditions.

The initiative seeks to identify suitable participants six months prior to their release, providing preparation for their transition back into the community.

Brain injuries can significantly affect memory, concentration, emotional regulation, communication, decision-making and impulse control.

These often-invisible difficulties may create obstacles when engaging with probation services.

Chris Marriott, justice programme manager at Headway UK, explained that the final module focuses specifically on progression and equipping participants with strategies for moving forward positively.

He noted that while past circumstances cannot be altered, the programme concentrates on enabling individuals to shape their futures as positively as possible.

Mr Marriott also highlighted the particular challenges faced by those preparing for release who acquired their brain injury during imprisonment, emphasizing their lack of experience navigating daily life in society with such a condition.

He pointed out that individuals whose brain injury contributed to their offending may have spent extended periods in structured institutional environments and would need to adapt to significant societal and technological changes that occurred during their incarceration.

The broader Headway UK justice initiative aims to increase awareness of brain injury within the criminal justice system and ensure affected individuals receive appropriate assistance.

Headway UK provides information and support to brain injury survivors, their relatives and professionals working in related fields, while maintaining a network of over 100 independent charitable organisations and local branches throughout the United Kingdom.

Official figures indicate that during 2023-24, there were 335,409 hospital admissions for brain injuries across the UK, representing approximately one admission every 90 seconds.
