The motoring entertainment programme has undergone significant changes following the departure of its original presenting lineup.

Thomas Holland and James Engelsman, both associated with the automotive content channel Throttle House, have joined TikTok personality Francis Bourgeois as the show’s new presenters.

The trio succeeds Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, who established the programme’s global following.

The inaugural episode featured the new hosts honouring Clarkson at his Oxfordshire farm location.

Clarkson, whose on-screen persona attracted a devoted viewership, provided measured commentary and offered reassurance regarding the presenting overhaul.

Guardian critic Stuart Heritage characterised the transition as prudent, noting the difference compared to Top Gear’s awkward evolution following Clarkson’s dismissal after an incident involving a producer.

The opening instalment saw each presenter commandeer a high-performance vehicle—a Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette, and Hennessey model—for a California-based journey.

Competition between the hosts featured prominently, alongside appearances by former racing driver Jenson Button and sequences pitting the cars against aircraft.

Heritage observed that enthusiasts of the programme’s previous incarnation would recognise the established template.

The current presenters have been assessed as competent but somewhat indistinct in their approach.

The combative dynamic present during Clarkson’s tenure, where foreign presenters might have faced pointed remarks, is absent from the new format.

Heritage noted the programme appears to prioritising caution, suggesting contributors recognise that allowing chemistry to develop naturally over time represents the optimal strategy for audience expansion.

A moment Heritage highlighted occurred at a private circuit where Holland referenced the programme’s streaming platform connection through a comment about tax obligations.

The critic suggested this element of subversive wit could signal a revival of the edgy humour that distinguished the original format.

Nevertheless, reservations persist regarding whether the programme retains sufficient purpose.

Heritage questioned whether familiar elements including extensive driving sequences, elaborate challenges, and precision driving demonstrations have exhausted their appeal.

The opening episode may represent an appeal to established viewers rather than a fundamental reimagining, with potential for bolder innovation in subsequent episodes.
