MPs approve £99.9m funding for King Charles’s Royal Household in 2027-28

The monarch is set to receive approximately £100 million to cover the running costs of the Royal Household.

MPs have sanctioned modifications to the calculation method for the Sovereign Grant, clearing the way for a core annual payment of £99.9 million to be made available to King Charles during the 2027-28 financial year.

The arrangement has been outlined in a report published by The Independent.

This funding allocation is designed to finance the performance of official royal responsibilities and the operational requirements of the Royal Household.

The Sovereign Grant covers expenditure relating to staff salaries, travel undertaken for official purposes, and the upkeep of royal residences currently in use.

The Crown Estate generates the profits from which this grant is drawn, with any surplus amounts forwarded to the Treasury.

The revised funding structure follows an assessment conducted by the Royal Trustees and subsequent endorsement from the House of Commons.

Treasury minister Dan Tomlinson explained that the enhanced payment accounts for the anticipated expenditure involved in managing the Royal Household alongside the expansion of the King’s official engagements.

The minister observed that the late Queen Elizabeth II reduced her international travel and state visit commitments during her later reign, whereas King Charles has substantially expanded his schedule of public appearances.

The updated financial framework will also allocate resources toward clearing accumulated maintenance debts on royal properties and financing improvements in areas such as digital security infrastructure and sustainable heating solutions.

Despite the rise in core funding, total royal expenditure is projected to fall as the long-running programme to modernise Buckingham Palace nears completion.

The combined Sovereign Grant currently amounts to £137.9 million, incorporating resources designated for the palace improvement initiative.

The disclosure is expected to reignite discussions regarding the monarchy’s financial arrangements, with advocates maintaining that the grant underpins essential royal functions while opponents scrutinise the extent of public expenditure involved.

King Charles maintains his private residence at Highgrove House in the Gloucestershire countryside, where he spends considerable time away from his official schedule.

The proposed £99.9 million core grant is scheduled to commence during the 2027-28 fiscal year.
