The Eagle and Child, famous for its associations with fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis, ceased operations in March 2020 and has remained shuttered since that time.
Its new proprietor, the American scientific enterprise known as the Ellison Institute, has been progressing with revitalisation proposals, though local residents have expressed bewilderment at the duration of the renovation work.
The research centre, financed by Larry Ellison, whose financial resources are comparable to those of Elon Musk, reportedly disbursed $10.7m, approximately £8m, for the establishment following its sale by St John’s College in 2023.
The institute has engaged the practice of internationally recognised architect Norman Foster to oversee the redesign of the venue.
Substantial restoration efforts commenced roughly twelve months prior.
Comprehensive refurbishment is in progress to preserve the establishment’s heritage features whilst improving amenities at the rear section, where an extension constructed in the 1960s has been demolished.
The garden area will also be made more accessible.
From the street frontage, minimal activity is discernible; however, individuals who have accessed the passage to view the rear of the property report that construction appears stalled, according to the Oxford branch of CAMRA.
The Ellison Institute of Technology released a communication asserting that the venue remains scheduled to welcome patrons in 2027.
The statement confirmed that comprehensive restoration work continues behind the substantial fencing visible to passers-by, with further announcements promised when additional information becomes available.
The establishment holds significant importance among admirers of Tolkien as the long-standing gathering location for the literary collective known as the Inklings.
The Oxford division of CAMRA observed that whilst operating as a conventional public house at ground level, the upper floors will accommodate meeting spaces, providing the institute with a presence in the city centre.
The organisation noted that the Ellison Institute represents a substantial American biotechnology and medical research enterprise constructing a facility at Oxford Science Park in Littlemore, comprising in excess of 300,000 square feet of research laboratories alongside educational and conference areas.
This development is anticipated for completion the following year and may provide employment for as many as 7,000 individuals.
During June, revised proposals for the £1bn science park received endorsement from municipal planning committee members.
Authorization was granted for the institute to vertically extend the existing trio of structures and incorporate two connecting atrium sections to consolidate them into a unified research and development complex.
Oxford City Council initially sanctioned proposals for three independent laboratory and office buildings on plots 23 through 26 at the science park in 2023.
The development will incorporate 30,000 square metres of research laboratories, high-performance computing infrastructure, an oncology and preventive healthcare facility, alongside purpose-built accommodation for the Generative Biology Institute and the Plant Biology Institute.
