A long-established trader in Oxford’s Covered Market has revealed plans for an expansion into a popular location.

The Oxford Cheese Company has announced it is establishing a new operation at Groves Yard, situated in Milton-under-Wychwood within a traditional artisan yard that houses various independent retailers, eateries and community facilities.

Robert Pouget commented that he was enjoying a drink at the Hare in Milton-under-Wychwood following a technical issue at the Groves Yard site.

The awning arrived measuring several feet too narrow in width.

He noted that the company was fortunate not to be disclosing the name of the business or the individual responsible for taking such inaccurate measurements of the available space.

He expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming project and promised to share details and updates shortly.

Robert Pouget launched the Oxford Cheese Company within Oxford’s Covered Market more than four decades ago.

This year, he voiced frustration over Oxfordshire County Council’s failure to offer compensation or an apology after the business was compelled to shut for a week due to work carried out by the city council.

The Oxford Cheese Company’s Covered Market outlet was forced to close in January and could operate for only limited hours because of noise, dust and drilling vibrations from the renovation of the avenue one entrance to the Covered Market.

Posting on Instagram at the time, the founder explained that rainwater was not being carried away properly, making it necessary to excavate and relay the pavement.

He added that, rather amusingly, once the work was completed it was discovered that the market gates would not shut, meaning the entire job had to be redone.

He stated that the council had offered no communication regarding this error, no apologies and no compensation for the loss of trade during an incredibly challenging period for businesses.
