A dedicated psychiatrist has been honoured by an NHS trust.

Max Shaw, a third-year core psychiatry trainee at Oxford Health, has been awarded the NHS trust’s June Exceptional People Individual Award.

He was nominated by Dr Daniel Maughan, a consultant psychiatrist at the Oxfordshire Early Intervention Service, who commended Dr Shaw’s focus on patient welfare and professional commitment.

Dr Maughan stated that Dr Shaw consistently makes himself available when required and produces work of an outstanding quality.

This is demonstrated by his ability to carefully carry out assessments for psychosis, which are frequently challenging and intricate, engage in open discussions with patients, seek input from colleagues across the Multidisciplinary Team and handle follow-up appointments and documentation, all while maintaining efficiency.

Dr Shaw began his psychiatry training with Oxford Health in 2023.

Since February 2026, he has worked with the Early Intervention in Psychosis Service.

He expressed his gratitude to Dr Maughan for nominating him for this award, and to colleagues he has collaborated with over recent years.

He noted that winning feels like recognition of the approach he has strived to practise psychiatry with compassion and honesty throughout his career so far.

At times, lengthy shifts or night duties can challenge his confidence in each person’s ability to make a meaningful difference, yet this award and his daily work with patients remind him that this remains both possible and vital.

Dr Maughan also emphasised Dr Shaw’s broader contributions, including assisting with an innovative initiative to enhance medical treatment approaches for first episode psychosis.
