The British retailer Morrisons has begun its programme to shut 100 convenience outlets after the first of these branches was closed permanently.

The initial store to cease trading was on Crockhamwell Road in Woodley, Berkshire, which had operated as a Morrisons Daily since November 2024 before shutting its doors last week.

The Post Office located at that site also discontinued operations after roughly six decades in business, and the company is reportedly seeking alternative retailers in the area that could provide similar services.

At least 52 Post Office locations across England, Wales and Scotland will be affected by these shutdowns, with a significant number situated in southern parts of England.

The stores being closed had been loss-making for several years and were previously part of the McColl’s chain, which Morrisons acquired in a £190 million deal in 2022.

The closures are scheduled to take place over the coming months, with potentially hundreds of retail employees facing job losses.

Nevertheless, the company has stated that none of its Oxfordshire outlets, including coffee shops, flower departments or pharmacies, will be shuttered this year.

Morrisons operates approximately 1,700 convenience stores alongside about 500 larger supermarket locations, with a workforce totalling around 95,000 people.

Its full-size supermarkets serve Banbury, Carterton and Faringdon, while its smaller Daily format stores can be found in Oxford, Abingdon, Thame and Banbury.
