Oxford couple become World Cup rivals with England facing Argentina

Published on

A Oxfordshire couple are bracing themselves for friendly competition as they prepare to support rival nations in tonight’s World Cup semi-final.

Matthew Newman and Romina Ledesma, who have spent five years together in Little Milton, will be rooting for opposite sides when England and Argentina clash on the international stage.

Matt, a devoted England fan, explained that significant rivalry exists between the two nations both on and off the pitch, and this marks his first opportunity to watch a match between them, particularly one of such magnitude in a World Cup semi-final.

His girlfriend, representing Argentina, shares the enthusiasm.

Romina, known as Romi, noted that Lionel Messi’s first encounter against England makes this a particularly significant fixture for her country this evening.

The couple have been engaging in playful banter since the tournament began, anticipating all along that their national teams might eventually meet.

Matt, employed in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, described how they have shared numerous light-hearted comments, including occasional references to the famous football anthem and discussions about his celebrations when victory arrives.

Romi mentioned they had joked about facing each other as opponents during this World Cup but never genuinely expected it to occur, yet here they find themselves.

She added that they have teased one another match by match, extending the friendly rivalry to their respective groups of supporters from both countries.

Despite their good-humoured competition, both acknowledge that viewing the match side by side might not be ideal this time.

Matt revealed they concluded that watching together would be impractical, given the awkwardness of sitting among predominantly English supporters while one partner cheers for Argentina.

Romi intends to view the game with her Argentine acquaintances at their residence, believing it will be thoroughly enjoyable and preferable to sitting in a pub or bar as an Argentina supporter.

Football carries profound significance for each of them, with both firmly believing their national team can claim victory.

Matt expressed that England have approached major tournament finals in recent years and possesses genuine belief they can go all the way this time, noting that Jude Bellingham is performing at an exceptional level and Harry Kane consistently delivers goals when required.

Romi maintains equally confident expectations for Argentina.

She stated that Argentinians are deeply passionate people, demonstrating that ardour through their unwavering support for teams across all sports including football, hockey, polo, Formula 1, basketball and others, backing competitors regardless of outcomes.

Each supporter has offered their own scoreline forecast, heightening the anticipation.

Matt forecasts a 3-1 England triumph while Romi anticipates a 4-2 Argentine victory.

He explained his reasoning involves England’s pace advantage on the flanks and Argentina’s high defensive line, though he wouldn’t be startled if the South Americans struck first given their quality.

Romi anticipates her team will secure a commanding victory, noting that Argentina has been causing anxious moments in recent matches but believes they will press aggressively and perform intensely from kick-off.
