Channel 4 has provided fresh details regarding the fate of the Great British Bake Off.
The broadcaster has sought to quell rumours that the popular baking programme might switch channels again after a substantial new agreement involving its maker, Love Productions.
The company responsible for Bake Off is presently owned by Sky, though it is poised to join ITV as a consequence of a £1.6 billion arrangement between the two media conglomerates.
This transition prompted speculation that Bake Off might eventually accompany Love Productions to ITV, echoing the programme’s earlier departure from the BBC for Channel 4.
A source cited by The Sun stated that industry insiders were discussing Bake Off potentially moving once more, which would represent a significant victory for ITV but unwelcome news for Channel 4 given that it ranks as their most-watched programme.
Channel 4 and Love Productions have now issued a combined response, emphasising that the show’s current contractual situation remains untouched by the Sky-ITV restructuring.
In comments shared with The Independent, a spokesperson explained that Channel 4’s GBBO agreement exists directly with Love Productions and consequently escapes any impact from the Sky-ITV transaction.
The communication continued that the programme’s existing multi-year contract with Love Productions stays valid, guaranteeing Bake Off viewers can carry on watching the show on Channel 4 as normal.
The precise conclusion date of that multi-year arrangement has not been disclosed, leaving uncertainty about the show’s longer-term position.
Bake Off originally premiered on the BBC in 2010, rapidly becoming one of its most successful family entertainment offerings, before its contentious relocation to Channel 4 in 2017.
An upcoming series featuring Oxford University graduate Nigella Lawson joining Paul Hollywood among the judges, with Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond back as presenters, is scheduled to broadcast later this year.
The broader Sky-ITV transaction will unite ITV’s broadcast channels and streaming service ITVX with Sky under a newly formed entity designed to challenge international streaming competitors more forcefully.
ITV Studios, the production company behind I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! and Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, falls outside the merger and will function as an independent worldwide content enterprise, delivering programming to the combined Sky-ITV operation through a long-term arrangement.
Sky has committed to investing a minimum of £2.1 billion in the partnership between 2028 and 2032, while also providing £1.2 billion for ITV’s broadcasting operations and offloading Love Productions to ITV for £200 million.
Looking past this initial phase, Sky chief executive Dana Strong noted that Coronation Street would remain on air for as long as audiences continued to embrace it, that all beloved programmes were secured under a five-year contract representing substantial commitment in their sector, and that she harboured no worries about what followed that period as renegotiation talks would simply commence.
