Police discovered a deceased woman in public lavatories at a historic site in Oxfordshire on Saturday morning.

A security perimeter was established around the toilets near Banbury Cross at approximately 8.20am on May 23.

Investigators are currently regarding the fatality as unexplained and have not yet determined the woman’s identity.

Thames Valley Police is urging members of the public with any knowledge to come forward.

A force spokesperson indicated that the force received notification at around 8.20am on the 23rd of an unexpected death in Banbury. Officers proceeded to the public conveniences on West Bar Street in the vicinity of Banbury Cross and unfortunately located a woman’s remains. The investigation remains in its early phases and the woman has not been identified. Anyone possessing details about this unexplained death should dial 101 and reference number 43260255904.

Banbury Cross stands as a 16-metre neo-Gothic structure. The monument inspired the nursery rhyme Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross, while the existing cross dates from 1859 and commemorated the marriage of Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter.
