A village establishment in Oxfordshire is set to restore its historic title after almost two centuries under a fresh name.
The venue in Steeple Aston, close to Bicester, will resume trading on June 18 under Jonathan Perritt’s stewardship, working alongside culinary professional and business partner Paolo Cangiano.
The brewery based in Hook Norton, which owns the property, has kept it shuttered for over a month while recruitment took place.
Mr Perritt, who established Supernova Pubs, commented that the venue embodied everything his company cherished: distinctive character, rich history, excellence, and authentic local identity. He expressed honour at becoming part of its narrative.
With extensive background in hospitality across London and Oxford, the team plans to launch a menu emphasising seasonal produce, premium ingredients, and straightforward, authentic cuisine.
They anticipate their classic Sunday roast offerings will quickly become popular among locals and nearby residents.
The operators also intend to highlight independent breweries, featuring Hook Norton’s award-winning cask conditioned beers alongside rotating selections from smaller craft producers.
A carefully curated wine selection, non-alcoholic options, and quality beverages will complement the offering.
Their goal remains straightforward: establishing a venue the community can embrace, offering warmth to all visitors whether seeking a casual drink, family dinner, or social get-together. A thriving local boozer for the long term.
To respect the establishment’s heritage, the original designation will be brought back as The Chequers, recognising its enduring role in Steeple Aston.
Hook Norton is collaborating with the incoming operators to ensure doors open by June 18.
The new proprietor expressed enthusiasm about welcoming customers soon and learning the local community.

The Steeple Aston establishment traces its roots to approximately 1750. Initially called The Chequers, the structure underwent substantial renovation in 1871.
Historic England records that this renovation incorporated decorative diamond-patterned mirrors created by Walter Gibbs and Sons of Blackfriars.
The business changed hands in 1830 and adopted the title The Red Lion, a name it retained for almost two hundred years.
Hook Norton Brewery purchased the property in 2005, with various operators managing it since that acquisition.
