Foreign visitors driving surge in Cotswolds tourism

Research indicates that interest in holidays to the Cotswolds has increased significantly worldwide.

Figures released by the tourism firm Holiday Lodges show that each month brings more than 4.2 million Google searches connected to the Cotswolds region.

Kate Atkin, Holiday Lodge’s Cotswolds regional specialist, explained that the United Kingdom naturally leads the way with 375 searches per 10,000 residents, while Ireland comes second among international markets, generating 82 searches per 10,000 inhabitants.

The region’s popularity extends across the globe, with Australians displaying the third-highest level of interest worldwide. Australia recorded 37 searches per 10,000 residents, demonstrating the destination’s expanding appeal beyond European borders.

She noted that the Cotswolds have long been a favourite domestic getaway for British holidaymakers, and it comes as no surprise that visitors from overseas now wish to experience the area. With undulating green countryside, golden-stone properties, and cobblestone shopping streets, the region offers the fairy-tale English countryside that many travellers envision when planning a rural escape. The area has also gained more prominence recently due to its celebrity connections. High-profile figures including Kim Kardashian and Lewis Hamilton have recently toured the region, which also counts the Beckham family among its residents. When factoring in renowned attractions such as Jeremy Clarkson’s Farmer’s Dog establishment and Diddly Squat Farm, alongside the prestigious Daylesford Farm Shop, the region provides visitors with an attractive blend of pastoral serenity, contemporary amenities, and an active social atmosphere.

Chipping Norton serves as an excellent base for exploring the area, with attractions including Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm and its historic main street located nearby. The town is also conveniently situated within driving distance of other Cotswolds settlements such as Moreton-in-Marsh, Great Tew, Stow-on-the-Wold, and Broadway.

Holiday Lodges also released its leading staycation spots, with Romeo Lodge, Oxford Lodge, and Churchill Lodge all situated in Chipping Norton leading the rankings.

This growth in interest follows calls for measures to address overtourism in certain scenic communities. Parishes including Bourton-on-the-Water are pushing for restrictions on tourist coaches to prevent what they describe as the trivialisation of the area. Elected representatives are asking Gloucestershire County Council to implement traffic regulations prohibiting large vehicles from passing through narrow village thoroughfares. Approximately 92 percent of Bourton-on-the-Water residents reported concerns about congestion and parking availability. The village welcomes 300,000 visitors annually despite having a population of just 4,000 permanent residents. Cotswolds Tourism is working to highlight lesser-known parts of the region to manage visitor numbers in popular destinations, including this West Oxfordshire town.
