The 2026 Thames Traditional Boat Festival scheduled to take place in Henley has been called off by its organisers just a few months before it was set to begin.

The event, which would have marked the 47th time the gathering was held, was planned for July 17 along the riverfront in Henley, with the two-day programme intended to showcase historic vessels, aircraft and land vehicles.

However, the organising committee has announced the cancellation, expressing profound regret in an official communication and confirming the next edition would be held in 2027 instead.

According to the committee, recent regulatory demands from the Environment Agency at Fawley Meadows combined with persistent riverbank maintenance meant that securing safe docking facilities and an operational venue within the timeframe available had become unachievable.

Despite prolonged discussions with representatives from Henley Royal Regatta in an attempt to find an alternative approach, the modifications announced on May 15 would have necessitated floating pontoon installations at considerable expense while presenting unacceptable hazards to attendees. Additionally, extensive sections of the meadows have become waterlogged and hazardous.

The committee acknowledged that the cancellation would come as a significant disappointment to loyal supporters, voluntary workers, vessel owners, display participants, musical acts, catering providers and collaborating businesses such as Rebellion, Oaken Grove and Henley Distillery, who have maintained their commitment to the event. They expressed sincere apologies to all affected.

They stated their intention to resume the festival the following year, preserving the character, surroundings and unique ambiance that have defined the occasion.

Individuals who have already purchased admission tickets, berthing rights or commercial pitches will receive correspondence from the organising team regarding refunds or the option to transfer their bookings to the 2027 event.

Since its inception in 1978, the Thames Traditional Boat Festival has expanded considerably and now encompasses a diverse range of attractions including watercraft, aircraft, automobiles, motorcycles, military equipment, alongside amusements such as a funfair, artisan displays, market stalls, live performances, culinary offerings, a canine competition and numerous other activities.
