Several thoroughfares in Rose Hill and Iffley now feature updated signage honoring individuals of local significance.

A total of five roadway markers in the region have been enhanced with explanatory details about the notable figures after whom they were named.

Oxford City Council’s deputy leader Ed Turner joined local residents and relatives to reveal the new informative signs throughout the area on Monday evening.

John Parker Close received additional signage to honor John Parker, who served as a longstanding Labour councillor at the city council and held the mayoral position during 1986/7.

Norma Brown Close was similarly equipped with an explanatory marker recognizing Norman Brown, who led the Rose Hill Community Centre during the 1960s.

William Way commemorates the reverend Canon Tony Williamson. He represented the city as a councillor from 1961-67 and again from 1970-88, served as mayor in 1982/3, worked as a priest at Pressed Steel Works for over three decades, directed education for the Oxford diocese from 1989 to 2000, and held a canon position at the cathedral.

Constance Norman Way honors Constance Norman, who previously headed Rose Hill First School. She was recognized for four decades of service prior to her retirement in 1977.

Carole’s Way bears the name of Carole Roberts, who represented Northfield Brook, Rose Hill and Iffley, as well as Temple Cowley as a city councillor. She also managed the Rose Hill and Donnington Advice Centre.

Krebs Gardens commemorates Professor Sir Hans Krebs, a biochemist, Nobel Prize laureate, and resident of Iffley.

The city council selected Constance Norman, Norman Brown, and John Parker in 2008 to have roads named in their honor.
