A Dunelm location in Oxfordshire has received a zero rating for food hygiene, shocking officials.
The prominent British retailer specializing in home furnishings and soft furnishings offers products ranging from bedding and window treatments to furniture and cookware.
The company traces its origins to a market stall in Leicester in 1979, established by Bill and Jean Adderley, with their initial retail location opening in that city in 1984.
During the 1990s, the business transitioned to larger store formats and currently maintains nearly 200 locations throughout the United Kingdom alongside a significant e-commerce platform.
Among the Dunelm locations in Oxfordshire is the establishment on Southam Road in Banbury.
Environmental Health officers from Cherwell District Council conducted an inspection at this location on Tuesday, March 17.
The inspectors identified serious concerns, resulting in the business receiving the lowest possible food hygiene score of zero out of five.
A key area of concern involved food safety management at the Banbury location, which was judged to require “major improvement.”
This encompasses the existence of systems or procedures designed to guarantee that food sold or served is safe for consumption.
It also relates to whether staff demonstrate awareness of food safety protocols and whether the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be upheld moving forward.
Another significant issue involved the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building, which was also determined to require “major improvement.”
This encompasses having suitable layout, ventilation, hand washing amenities and pest control measures to facilitate proper food hygiene.
Similarly, improvement in the hygienic handling of food, covering preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling and storage, was deemed “necessary.”
Dunelm has been asked to provide comments regarding the inspection and resulting food hygiene rating.
