A residential home in Wallingford has received a requiring improvement rating from regulators despite positive feedback from those living there.

The Care Quality Commission examined Benson House Care Home after concerns were raised about end-of-life care, medication practices, and staffing numbers.

The assessment gave the home a requiring improvement rating overall, with particular issues identified in safety and leadership categories.

Inspectors discovered that medication records for some residents were not properly updated, safe medication practices were not being adhered to, and increased medication doses were given without written explanation.

Care workers told inspectors that staffing levels were inadequate, particularly in the dementia unit.

The November inspection looked at a facility able to accommodate 70 older adults. The CQC stated that residents could be at risk of harm due to excessive medication.

Despite these findings, inspectors observed that staff members had received comprehensive training and consistently showed kindness, empathy, and compassion while respecting residents’ privacy and dignity.

One resident said the staff were wonderful, they enjoyed being around them, and received excellent care.

The home also offered many activities for residents including films, music sessions, physical exercise, and visits from local people.

Weekly fees at the home range from £1,907 for self-funded residential care to £2,138 for self-funded dementia nursing care.
