A major investment of £3.5 million is set to transform how shared electric scooters and bicycles are parked across Oxford, announced the city’s leading rental electric transport provider this week.
The substantial funding package, named the Oxford Parking Fund, aims to tackle the ongoing problem of incorrectly parked shared electric scooters and bicycles throughout the city.
The business has been operating in Oxford since 2021 and has enabled roughly 5 million trips using electric scooters and electric bicycles within the city to date.
This additional £3.5 million injection into its sustainable transport programme will finance a new team of street patrol staff, removal of dangerous or problematic parking areas, introduction of tougher parking rules for users who repeatedly park incorrectly, and regular monthly face-to-face training sessions with community partners.
Labour MP for Oxford East Anneliese Dodds joined company officials in Headington to review locations where electric device parking has been problematic.
The MP observed the measures the company is implementing, which they claim will enhance parking for shared electric scooters and bicycles in Oxford, and discussed how the company is attempting to address concerns submitted by her constituents.
She expressed support for the company’s pledge to fund improved parking infrastructure, additional street-based personnel and more stringent enforcement against irresponsible parking in Oxford, and expressed desire to see this translate into essential change.
She stated she will continue to collaborate with local residents, local authorities and the company to drive these improvements forward and ensure streets remain safe for everyone.
The funding initiative will also see expanded operations with outside contractors to respond more rapidly to electric bicycle and electric scooter issues, while collaborating with the council on street parking measures to free up congested pavements.
This new funding builds on the £1.65 million the company has already spent improving parking bays and rider compliance.
The company’s senior public policy manager described Oxford as one of their flagship UK locations, noting that in recent years their shared electric scooters and bicycles have become integral to how thousands of individuals commute to work, university, retail establishments and appointments daily.
The manager expressed pride in what has been accomplished alongside partners at Oxfordshire County Council and Oxford City Council, yet acknowledged continuous opportunities to refine the service for all users.
The manager explained that their fresh £3.5 million Oxford Parking Fund represents a deepened commitment, investing in superior parking bays, more intelligent technology and additional personnel on the streets to maintain safety, cleanliness and accessibility.
The manager stated that by directing substantial funds toward parking enhancements in the coming years, they aim to demonstrate that shared small-scale vehicles can reduce traffic and emissions while harmoniously coexisting with pedestrians, local inhabitants and other road users.
The manager affirmed that they are committed to the long term and dedicated to maintaining elevated standards in Oxford.
