Village gardens transformed by unexpected dragon visitors

Published on

Display dragons have been showing up in residential gardens throughout a village located in southern Oxfordshire.

Residents of West Hagbourne, positioned near Didcot, have crafted model dragons as part of a yearly celebration honoring St George’s Day.

This custom, which began in 2009, involves community members constructing diverse, creative dragons using materials such as papier-mâché, wire, and paper, and positioning them throughout the village—with numerous pieces displayed in homeowners’ gardens.

Throughout the years, the event has been coordinated by the West Hagbourne Village Association, with the aim of commemorating St George’s Day and fostering community participation.

Justine Thompson opted for a table tennis theme, while Dan Tozer’s creation drew inspiration from learner drivers.

St George’s Day, observed each year on April 23, serves as the feast day of Saint George, England’s patron saint, commemorating his passing in 303 AD.

The day is marked with processions, banners, and customary cuisine, though it does not constitute a bank holiday.

Leading up to this year’s St George’s Day, banners depicting the Cross of St George and the Union Flag were installed on lampposts throughout the county by Raise The Colours: Oxfordshire, a volunteer organization.

The county council has released a formal legal notice attempting to prohibit the attachment of these flags to lampposts, and council employees have taken down several of them.
