Oxford United honours Amelia Aplin with heartfelt tribute

Published on

At their annual awards night, Oxford United honoured Amelia Aplin by dedicating their Women’s Young Player of the Year prize to her memory and declaring it would carry her name in perpetuity.

The promising young player died aged 15 in spring, devastating the club and its supporters.

During an academy fixture against Fulham in March at Oxford Sports Park, she suffered a collapse on the pitch and was confirmed deceased that afternoon.

She represented Oxford United within the Junior Premier League.

The tragedy prompted an outpouring of sympathy from the club community, teammates, fans, and broader football networks. The next home match against Blackburn Rovers in March included a commemorative pause to honour her.

The club hosted its traditional End of Season Award Evening on April 26, celebrating accomplishments across all three teams.

With profound solemnity, the club presented this year’s Women’s Young Player of the Year award to Amelia Aplin as an enduring memorial.

A club spokesperson explained that Amelia passed away during the season at just 15 years old, and that in her honour this recognition would bear her name as the Amelia Aplin Women’s Young Player of the Year Award for all future years, forever yellow.

The gesture touched supporters, who widely regarded it as a fitting and meaningful way to remember her.
