Oxfordshire County Council has given the green light to two additional pedestrian crossings in the southern part of the county as part of efforts to enhance safety for members of the public.

According to the council, these new crossings in southern Oxfordshire are expected to lower the number of pedestrian injuries resulting from traffic collisions.

A puffin crossing will be constructed along Reading Road in Cholsey, situated near the intersection with Ferry Lane.

A toucan crossing is planned for Copenhagen Drive in Abingdon, positioned west of the roundabout where it meets Wootton Road.

Thames Valley Police documented in excess of 100 traffic violations along Reading Road during 2024. The same stretch of road saw one collision resulting in one casualty in 2020.

Last September, a motorcyclist lost their life following a collision with an SUV in Cholsey on Wallingford Road.

Records from Thames Valley Police show multiple collisions occurred on Copenhagen Drive in 2023, including one that proved fatal.

Back in 2009, an eleven-year-old girl sustained serious injuries when her bicycle collided with a van.

Council members have also approved plans to combine the separate footpath and cycling lane on Copenhagen Drive into a single shared path.

These approvals align with Oxfordshire County Council’s broader initiative to decrease the number of collisions and enhance safety conditions for those traveling by foot, bicycle, or vehicle.
