A celebratory gathering took place in Wantage’s market place to mark England’s national saint, with musical entertainment, folk dancing and a special treasure trail designed for children.

The Oxfordshire town, known as the birthplace of King Alfred the Great, hosted the event in its central square.

The programme ran from 11am to 3pm on Sunday, April 26, with many attendees dressed in period attire, including Mayor Iain Cameron. Musical contributions came from the Wantage Concert Brass Band, Greengage Folk Group and the Vale Islanders Dance Group.

Additional entertainment was provided by Icknield Way Morris Men and the Hendred Ukulele Group, while younger visitors enjoyed a dragon-themed quest.

A Wantage Town Council representative commented that conditions were ideal for the St George’s Day festivities, providing excellent circumstances for the community to come together.

The council expressed gratitude to all those who came along and backed the occasion, and offered particular appreciation to the performers who entertained the crowd, the traders who set up stalls, the sponsors who provided support, and the dedicated volunteers whose efforts made the day possible.

The council stated it intended to contact those who completed the dragon hunt successfully, and revealed details of the forthcoming International Food and Drink Festival planned for July 5.

The representative added that they looked forward to seeing everyone at the next community gathering.
