Oxford’s traditional May Morning spring celebration is preparing for its annual return, continuing a legacy spanning more than 500 years.
The festivities honour the arrival of spring and are scheduled for Friday, May 1. Revellers are expected to gather at daybreak on Magdalen Bridge and High Street.
This much-loved city tradition dates back over five centuries. The programme begins at 6am with singers from Magdalen College School delivering a performance from the apex of Magdalen College’s Great Tower.
Paula Redway, the council’s culture and community development manager, stated that May Morning offers an extraordinary experience. The gathering brings together locals and visitors, with students, families, and holidaymakers all waking early to take part in this treasured custom that welcomes spring.
Organisers are encouraging those attending to follow steward instructions, stay within pedestrian areas, and use designated spaces for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Motorists and cyclists should be aware of road closures and diversion routes through the city.
The singers will present the Hymnus Eucharisticus, a composition from the 1600s written by a fellow of Magdalen College. Following this, approximately 20 minutes of tower bells will be rung from the Great Tower by members of the Oxford Society of Change Ringers.
Celebrations will take place throughout the city, encompassing live music, Morris dancing, traditional folk entertainment, and culinary options. Many establishments will open ahead of their usual time.
A crowd management strategy will be in operation on Magdalen Bridge, including one-way walking routes and reserved areas for wheelchair users, parents with infants, and those with buggies. Standing in the walking lanes will not be permitted, with stewards directing spectators to appropriate viewing spots.
Cyclists will be prohibited from crossing Magdalen Bridge on foot or by bicycle immediately before or during the proceedings.
A road closure will be in effect from The Plain to the upper section of High Street between 2am and approximately 9am on Friday, May 1, with signposted diversions and alternative routes for cyclists.
Oxford City Council coordinates the event with support from Thames Valley Police, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Oxford Direct Services, Oxfordshire County Council, and Magdalen College.
Should Magdalen Bridge reach full capacity, entry will be restricted from both approaches using barriers and stewarding staff. Further information about May Morning can be found on the council’s website.
