A broken water main has led to water supply problems hitting homes and forcing a school to close in the area around Abingdon.

Thames Water reported a problem with the water supply during the morning of Monday, April 27, noting that homes in the OX14 area including Sutton Courtenay were impacted.

Engineers attended the site and discovered a fractured pipe, which needed to be isolated before repair operations could begin.

A communication from Thames Water released at around midday on Monday stated that work continues on repairing the burst water main in the vicinity of Sutton Courtenay. The company explained that the compromised pipe is presently being sealed to halt water flow and that this essential procedure will enable specialists to carry out the necessary repairs. The communication noted that sealing the pipe will also minimize the extent of properties experiencing no water or reduced pressure. Thames Water thanked customers for their patience as work continues to restore water supply.

Further updates are expected to appear on the Thames Water incidents website later in the day.

St Blaise CofE Primary School in Milton Hill had to halt lessons for the day because there was no water supply available at the school.

The school intends to reopen on Tuesday, April 28, though this depends on water services being reinstated.

Evidence shows the burst water main is located close to the Sutton Courtenay Environmental Centre on Sutton Courtenay Road, where Thames Water service vehicles were seen arriving at about 8:30am on Monday.
