Oxford’s Selfridges: Vintage photos of beloved lost department store

Published on

Our readers recently voted Selfridges among the establishments they wish were still operating in Oxford – below are some throwback photographs from the Westgate location.

The retailer launched its Oxford location at 27 Westgate approximately in 1972.

During its three decades of operation in the city, the expansive and upscale department store underwent numerous transformations.

Around 1989, the business was rebranded under the Lewis’s name by Sears, the company that also controlled the Selfridges location on Oxford Street in the capital.

The Lewis’s storefront was subsequently acquired and renamed Allders roughly in 1996, remaining under that name until shutting its doors in 2005.

These photographs from the Oxford Mail archive capture scenes of Selfridges in Oxford, including window displays, customers, special occasions, staff members and additional moments.
